Abbott Laboratories — Plants in Michigan

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that they were exposed to asbestos while working at Abbott Laboratories plants in Michigan. This page documents the Michigan portion of Abbott Laboratories’s multi-state operations. For the full corporate summary and plants in other states, see the Abbott Laboratories manufacturer page.

Premises Description

Abbott Laboratories has been named as a premises defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation for alleged asbestos exposure across its national pharmaceutical and nutrition manufacturing network — including the Abbott Park IL headquarters and R&D campus, the North Chicago IL historic pharmaceutical and IV-solution plant, the Rocky Mount NC pharmaceutical manufacturing complex, the Casa Grande AZ nutrition plant, the Sturgis MI infant-formula facility, and other Abbott and Ross Laboratories-legacy sites.

Abbott pharmaceutical and nutrition plants are heavy industrial premises: pharmaceutical fermentation buildings, API-synthesis and bulk-chemical halls, IV-solution and sterile-injectable suites, infant-formula evaporator and spray-dryer plants, tablet-compression and coating rooms, powerhouse steam plants, and refrigeration systems. Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that pre-1980 Abbott plant premises involved asbestos through:

  • Asbestos pipe covering on pharmaceutical and nutrition steam mains, fermentation lines, IV-solution sterilizer feeds, and process piping
  • Asbestos sheet gaskets at fermenter, reactor, autoclave, evaporator, and process-piping flanges
  • Asbestos block and cork insulation on pharmaceutical, biologics, and infant-nutrition refrigeration equipment
  • Asbestos rope packing on pharmaceutical pumps, valves, centrifuges, and mixers
  • Asbestos refractory and gaskets at Abbott powerhouse boilers and API / nutrition dryer ovens
  • Asbestos sprayed fireproofing on structural steel in multi-story Abbott Park, North Chicago, and Rocky Mount halls
  • Asbestos millboard, arc chutes, and panel materials in plant switchgear
  • Asbestos lab bench tops, fume-hood liners, and glove-box insulation in Abbott research and QC labs
